It can take hours sometimes so find something useful to do cause watching the process is a bit boring. The result is faster access to your files and programs, no more errors on your hard drive and a faster computer.

• Scanning for Viruses, Trojans, and Mal-ware will help your computer immensely. This can be performed by downloading or buying anti-virus software, I prefer Mcafee Virus Scan as it has proven to actually work when it comes to finding and removing them from a computer. Some virus scanners actually slow down your computer and force you to have them on. You have to kind of weigh between being protected and slow or being unprotected and being fast. There is no need to constantly be protected, I believe a scan once every week will do. You need your speed in order to do what you need to do in a timely manner and also to have fun.

• You will be amazed at how much storage temporary internet files can build up over time. Anytime you go on the internet, the computer downloads everything on the web page in order to access it faster next time your there. Even though these advancements are quite remarkable, there is a lot of confusion about just what this big brother of the 32-bit computer system can and cannot do. No, it isn’t twice as fast. No, it isn’t impossible to find software that runs on it. So, what is the big deal about 64-bit? Furthermore, what does 64-bit mean, anyway? This article will answer these noteworthy questions.

It All Starts with 1 bit

All computers, of course, work on digital platforms. Every program you open and every other kind of action you take on your computer moves a pile of 0’s and 1’s around. The sensational and remarkable things your computer does for you are possible because of its ability to add series of very large numbers that consist of 0’s and 1’s.

One digit in the realm of computer technology can only be a 0 or a 1. We call this a bit. In our everyday world, digits consist of 10 numbers each. In other words, we use a decimal system. Computers use digits consisting of 2 numbers; a 1 or a 0. This system is what we know as a digital system.

The largest 8 digit number in a decimal system is 99,999,999, or 1 short of 100 million. The largest number yielded by 8 digits in the digital world is 256. 8 digit digital numbers are really popular in computer technology; they are called bytes.

In one Hertz of an operation, a 32-bit computer is capable of pushing around numbers as large as 4 digits of bytes, or 256 X 256 X 256 X 256. This number is 4,294,967,296. Another way to say this number is 4 Gigabytes or GB. Yes, I know this number looks like it is more than 4GB, but 1GB is equal to 1,073,741,824. Don’t ask, it’s just a digital thing. Anyway, this is why 32-bit systems can address up to 4GB of RAM.

Remember, we’re talking about transferring large numbers in one clock tick. Most of today’s computers make 2 billion or so clock ticks each second. Also note CPU’s, since the Pentium 4 came on the scene, use hyper-threading technology. This allows more than one operation to be performed each clock tick.

64 Bit Problems – The Good and the Bad About 64 Bit

Probably, the greatest leap in computer technology over the last several years has been the development of the 64 bit computer systems. 64 bit breaks through barriers 32 bit had presented us with. The main barrier is the 4GB memory addressing limit. We have lived very comfortably with this barrier until very recently. While it seems like adding an extra 32 bits to our computer’s power structure should grant us an extra 4GB of computer power, this is not the case. In fact, these extra 32 bits multiply our computer’s power. In other words, 64 bit systems, technically can address 4GB X 4GB of RAM. This number calculates to more than 18 Exabytes! The actual calculation is 4,294,967,296 X 4,294,967,296 = 18,446,744,073,709,551,616 Bytes of RAM.

Needless to mention is the fact we have no computer architecture available today to actually work with such a massive amount of memory. However, this does illustrate that 64 bit computer systems take all the limits off future advancements. The limits that are set on our computer’s capacities now are things like:

How many CPU’s can we cram into a motherboard?

How many tracks can we attach to our PC boards? And,

How complex a chipset can we develop to coordinate all the movements of a system talking back and forth to 18 gig of memory?
